TABE Testing

The Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is a standardized assessment evaluating basic skills in reading and mathematics for adults entering postsecondary education or training programs.

Not all programs require TABE. CNA, Central Service Technician, Phlebotomy, and the Adult Diploma Program do not require TABE testing.

Upcoming Testing Dates

All sessions are held in the morning (9:00 AM – 12:30 PM). Seating is limited — call 330-744-8723 to reserve your spot. When Youngstown City Schools are closed or on a two-hour delay, testing is canceled.

Exam Details

Duration

75 minutes per section (Reading and Math). Both exams taken same day if required.

Testing Fee

$20.00 non-refundable testing fee. Retesting fee also applies.

Scheduling

Results

You will be notified of your results within 48 hours by phone. An on-screen calculator is available during the Math exam.

Online Tools Training

Before taking the TABE, practice with the online tools training. It opens on the DRC testing site and requires Google Chrome.

Once it opens, select:

  • Reading: TABE 11&12 Reading > Level D > Standard
  • Math: TABE 11&12 Mathematics > Level M > Standard

Preparing for the TABE

  • Review basic math skills: fractions, decimals, percentages, basic algebra
  • Practice reading comprehension with passages and questions
  • Contact the ASPIRE program for free tutoring classes to help you prepare

Retesting

You may take the TABE exam twice. If you do not pass on the first attempt, it is recommended to contact the ASPIRE program for free tutoring before retesting. A retesting fee applies.
